MASTHEAD: Evening MBA Program
IN for Faculty and Staff IN for MBA Students

HEADER: Frequently asked questions
The following answers address commonly asked admissions questions:

When should I apply to the Evening Program?
Applications are accepted for fall term only. The application deadline for the Evening MBA Program is April 15th. Online applications should be completed and supplemental materials should be postmarked by this date. The MBA Application fee is $75 for the online application.

The Admissions Committee uses a two-step application process for the Evening MBA program. After a careful review of the applications, competitive candidates are invited to a day of evaluation activities in early June. If you are applying to the Evening MBA program, please keep this date open should you be invited to attend. For those applicants who are invited, attendance at Evaluation Day is a mandatory part of the Evening MBA application process. Applicants should plan accordingly.

May I transfer credit for courses I have taken at another school toward my Evening MBA degree at the UW?

To be considered as a transfer applicant to the Evening program, an applicant must have completed the equivalent of the MBA core courses at another AACSB-accredited institution. If only a portion of the core coursework has been completed, an applicant will be considered for admission, but will be required to start the UW MBA Program as a new student due to the integrated structure of the Evening MBA core curriculum.

We admit students for autumn quarter only. A transfer applicant must comply with the same application process and deadlines as other applicants, and will need to meet the same admissions standards as a new applicant with respect to GMAT, undergraduate record, work experience, essays, etc. Satisfactory performance in a prior program of comparable accreditation and curriculum will be an additional consideration with transfer applicants. To earn the MBA degree, a transfer student will need to complete at least the minimum number of credits required to earn a UW master's degree. At two evening classes per quarter, this would require somewhat more than one year of part time study in our program.

Can I take MBA courses before being admitted to the MBA Program, and then apply these courses to my degree later if I am admitted?
The MBA Program is designed to introduce fundamental concepts in the early courses and to build on that knowledge in the future core courses and electives. For this reason, attempting to sample MBA courses where a seat might be available is not productive and not encouraged. Applicants seeking to prepare for the MBA are encouraged to enroll in undergraduate courses at a local college or university. Prospective students will find classes in macro and micro economics, accounting, statistics and math (through college-level calculus) most helpful, especially if the applicant has little or no previous exposure to coursework in these topic areas.

Can I waive courses based on past education?
A small portion of work at another school may make you eligible to waive some courses in the Evening MBA Program. However, there are two reasons we discourage students from seeking course waivers. The team-based structure of our MBA Programs is disrupted when a particular team member opts out of one or more core courses. Also, the content, depth and difficulty of a course at another institution is often different from the UW course, leaving the student poorly prepared for content in subsequent UW course. After a student has been admitted to the Evening MBA Program, the evening program coordinator will review requests to waive MBA courses. These requests are considered on a case-by-case and course-by-course basis. Less then 10 percent of the Evening MBA students waive one to two courses. The UW MBA will rarely waive more then four courses. Course waivers will not be evaluated prior to admission.

I earned my three-year undergraduate degree from an institution in another country (i.e. Bangladesh, Burma, India, Nepal, Pakistan). Will that be sufficient for admission into the MBA Program?
The University of Washington requires graduation from a four-year degree program for admission to our MBA program. Applicants who have earned their undergraduate degree in a three-year program would be required to have completed a master's degree to fulfill this portion of the admissions requirement. If you are uncertain whether or not your undergraduate degree qualifies you for admission to a University of Washington graduate program, complete the questionnaire at www.grad.washington.edu/admissions/intl/pep_welcome.asp.

Some U.S. universities require only an additional year of study beyond the bachelor's degree without requiring a degree at the end of this additional year. You should inquire at each institution where you might study. The University of Washington is among the institutions requiring a degree. A second bachelor's degree from a four-year institution may also qualify an applicant, but this often requires more study time. Use some caution in choosing which degree to pursue.

What kind of financial aid is available?
Evening MBA students finance their education with personal funds, employer support, educational loans, private scholarships or, in most cases, a combination of resources. Domestic applicants may apply for Federal loans. The University of Washington requires that you file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA or the Renewal FAFSA). The FAFSA form may be found at local colleges or public libraries, requested from the UW Office of Student Financial Aid, or completed online at FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You should submit the FAFSA form as soon after January 1 as possible and list "University of Washington-Seattle," Code 003798, in Section G.

What are your minimum requirements for GMAT, undergraduate G.P.A. and work experience?
We do not have minimum requirements for getting accepted into the program. Our GMAT, GPA and work experiences, averages can be viewed on our Student Profile. Please keep in mind that although we have average numbers, the ranges are wide in every category. If an applicant is lacking in one area, but is strong in other areas, he or she may still be admitted.
