FULL STORY: Business School Alumnus a Candidate on “The Apprentice”

DATE: December 8, 2006

James Sun (BA 1999) will be one of the candidates on the next season of “The Apprentice,” Donald Trump’s popular reality show that premiers January 7 on NBC.

Sun is the founder and CEO of Zoodango.com, a web-based professional networking company that encourages face-to-face meetings and the exchange of expertise.

His rags-to-riches story will likely resonate with Trump. When Sun was four, his family immigrated to the United States from Korea. They arrived with $35, knew no one and spoke no English.

But the family eventually flourished. Sun, a born entrepreneur, began reading The Wall Street Journal at age 13, and created a small technology investment fund at 18. By the time he graduated from the UW Business School with honors, he had turned an initial investment of $5,000 into $2.3 million.

Sun then worked for Deloitte Consulting and traveled extensively, all the while studying human interactions in this age of ubiquitous information technology. These observations provided the spark for Zoodango.

But Sun jumped at the chance to vie for a coveted spot on Trump’s management team. For the sixth season of  "The Apprentice," the action will move from New York City to Los Angeles, with each week’s winning team earning the right to live like Trump in a luxurious mansion while the losers have to sleep outside in tents.

James Sun will speak about his post-UW experiences and adventures on April 26, 2007, during the third-annual Washington Weekend.
