Today the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business announced it raised $180.5 million in Campaign UW: Creating Futures, which ended June 30th.
The number of endowed student support funds – scholarships and fellowships – created in the campaign surpassed the total accumulated in Foster’s prior 83-year history. And endowed faculty positions doubled to more than 60.
James Jiambalvo, who became dean of the Foster School in 2005 after serving as a full professor in the accounting department, was integral in accelerating the campaign’s success. His knowledge of the School combined with preexisting relationships as an active faculty member, program director and departmental chair enabled Jiambalvo to create and convey a compelling vision that attracted $105 million in 36 months.
"These funds are truly transformational," Jiambalvo said. "They’re already allowing us to hire and retain top scholars, provide scholarships to deserving students, invest in our programs and centers and build state-of-the-art facilities. We’re on our way to becoming one of the top business schools in the country thanks to the generosity of our many supporters."
The Foster School’s expanded complex will add two new buildings. The first, PACCAR Hall, is scheduled to break ground in September for completion in 2010. PACCAR Hall will be a 135,000-square-foot facility offering a combination of classrooms, faculty office space, a 250-seat auditorium, student lounges and a boardroom. The second building will be completed in 2012.
Additionally, the funds will allow the school to establish a leadership center, something Jiambalvo established as a top priority when he became dean.
During the course of the campaign, 13,000+ donors contributed to the Foster School and average annual commitments quadrupled.
"Everyone at the school is grateful and humbled by the generosity we’ve seen in this campaign," said Assistant Dean of External Relations Steven Hatting. "This campaign was guided by a great constant: belief in our ability to transform lives through the educational experience we provide. Our donors and volunteers have given the Foster School the opportunity to deliver on this promise like never before."
Of the $180.5 million, $27.5 million has been raised for faculty endowments, $24 million for student scholarships, $78 million for the school’s new facilities and $51 million for its programs and centers.
