MBA placement, admission numbers among the nation's best
Election-year rhetoric may be thick with argument over the pace of economic
recovery in the US, but for graduating UW Business School
MBAs, the job market is positively booming. Among the outgoing
full-time MBA class of 2004, 90 percent received a job
offer by graduation and 97.5 percent were employed within
three months of graduation. Not only are these numbers
an improvement from the previous year's (66 percent employed
at graduation and 96 percent within three months), they
also place the UW Business School among the nation's very
best.
"Our MBA students' success in the job market is a reflection
of our intensive strategy to build deep ties with our alumni
and companies in the region," says MBA program executive
director Dan Poston, "and to connect our students with those
companies as often as possible."
The matchmaking of UW MBAs and local businesses has required
little coercion. UW MBAs, Poston explains, tend to take a
vested interest in the Pacific Northwest's pioneering high-tech
industries. And the businesses in those cutting-edge industries
are finding in UW students the aptitude to lead.
This aptitude appears to be growing. Amid a systemic decline
in applicant credentials caused by a shrinking market for
MBA students worldwide, this fall's incoming class of full-time
UW MBAs brought with it an average GMAT score of 677 (up
from 669 in 2003) and an average GPA of 3.45 (up from 3.4
in 2003). These numbers place the UW Business School squarely
in the nation's top tier.
But impressive numbers alone do not make for quality managers.
"Recruiters tell us they love the fact that our students
don't come with an 'I'm an MBA' attitude," Poston adds. "They're
much more likely to roll up their sleeves and say, 'Tell
me what needs to be done and I'll do it.' That's a big plus."
