Study team brews a winning formula: teamwork, leadership and humor
Five strangers concocted a first-rate study team when mixed together in TMMBA. Team Strange Brew was named to honor the diverse group membership (including Canadian Samantha Britney and several confessed “Strange Brew” movie fans). Over several months, team members learned the dynamics of taking and relinquishing leadership roles, collaborating on challenging assignments and sharing knowledge. The team hit its stride handling a tough strategy project – how major music labels can adapt to a rapidly changing competitive landscape in the music industry.
Michael Nguyen said the group has been a great source of support for balancing the demands of school, work and life. “We keep each other accountable,” he stressed. “When one of us is having a tough time, team members say, ‘Is there anything we can do to help?’” Each group member reflected on the value of the study team to their TMMBA experience:
Effective Leadership (Craig): Working on a team has been an invaluable part of the TMMBA Program. To be an effective leader in business you must be able to build great teams.
Perspective (Amy): Everyone on the team brings a unique set of experiences, which adds depth and context to what we are learning.
Skilled Peers (Samantha): I chose the TMMBA Program because I would be able to learn from my classmates – accomplished professionals with diverse backgrounds.
Experience (Duane): From program managers, software developers, to general managers, I felt I could learn from my peers. The knowledge and expertise my team members bring is incredible. I gained practical leadership tools that have improved my effectiveness at work and the effectiveness of my entire team.
Team Success (Michael): I think my study team is the best. They are a madly diverse group of individuals who are incredibly successful, engaging, intelligent, yet still light-hearted. They have kept me on task and have a lot to do with my success in this program. |
