Program Requirements

To earn a certificate in the Retail Management Program, students must complete prerequisites and 20 credits including a paid summer internship. Students interested in RMP should begin taking prerequisites and required courses and electives as soon as possible.

The interdisciplinary program in Pharmacy Management emphasizes the management skills needed to run not only pharmacies but in some cases an entire drug store. This program requires that pharmacy students (and other non-business majors) complete prerequisites before taking required courses to earn their Pharmacy Management certificate.

Prerequisites (RMP applications are accepted prior to completion of Pre-reqs)

For Non-Business Majors:
BA 470: Accounting and Finance
BA 471: Marketing
BA 472: Managing Human Assets

MKTG 301 and BA 471 are interchangeable

For Business Majors:
ACCTG 215 or 210
ECON 200 or 201
MATH 112 or 124
An English composition course
MKTG 301 (Marketing Concepts)

MKTG 370 Retailing (4 credits)
Prerequisite: MKTG 301 or BA 471

MKTG 495 B (4 credits credit/no credit)

Required. Generally taken after the junior year. Some exceptions.

Full-time, 10 to 12-week paid internship with major retailer. Student gains valuable hands-on experience in retailing including, but not limited to, sales, buying, visual merchandising and involvement in management meetings as well as participating in the retailer’s management training program. Students are often given management responsibilities within a department, or a major project or event within the store, while completing their internship. Prerequisite: MKTG 301 or BA 471, MTKG 370 and acceptance into the Retail Management Program

MKTG 477 Seminar
Merchandise Acquisition and Management
(4 credits)

Required. Offered Autumn Quarter only, and generally taken in senior year after an internship.

Integration of summer internship experiences with discussion of merchandise acquisition. Topics include retail inventory management system, processes of planning and buying merchandise, private label and imported goods and relevant personnel management areas. Course centers on major project done for and with company buying staff. Prerequisites: MKTG 301 or BA 471, 370 and internship.
MKTG 478 Seminar Retail Merchandising and Design Management (4 credits)

Required. Offered Winter Quarter only, and generally taken in senior year following MKTG 477.
Second of capstone seminars includes integration of summer internship experiences with customer service, customer communications, merchandise presentation and leadership skills. Students visit local retailers to observe visual presentations, prepare design plan for a store, and examine management styles to determine philosophy for employees and provide customer service. They also plan the annual Retail Day event. Prerequisites: MKTG 301 or BA 471, 370 and internship
