Business Honors Requirements

All students must earn 12 graded credits of honors-designated coursework to receive the "with distinction" designation upon graduation.

  • 2 credits: BA 390
  • 4 credits: MGMT 430 (honors section)
  • 6 credits: Ad Hoc coursework or 499 research

Six of those 12 credits are the same for all students: BA 390 and MGMT 430. BA 390 is offered in the Autumn and Spring Quarters each year. The honors sections of MGMT 430 are offered in Winter and Spring Quarters each year.

There is more flexibility in how the remaining six credits are completed. Options include:

  • Ad Hoc Honors credit (credits vary depending on how many credits the course is regularly worth)

The Ad Hoc process transforms a business elective or Option course into an honors designated course You are not receiving additional credits for the paper or project you complete to earn the honors designation via the Ad Hoc process. See the Ad Hoc forms and guidelines for additional information.

New policy as of Autumn 2005: B ECON 300, FIN 350, MGMT 300, MKTG 301 and OPMGT 301 cannot be done for Ad Hoc designation. Students who have previously completed any of these courses for Honors designation are still able to use them toward the requirements.

  • Honors Undergraduate Research (credits vary, but must be at least 2 to count toward the honors program)

Undergraduate research takes place via registration for a 499 course. This is an opportunity for students to work closely with a faculty member on a research project of interest to them. Students may be interested in selecting a faculty member whose expertise is in an area of interest for more in-depth research. As with the Ad Hoc process, a form is necessary to convert your 499 credit to reflect an honors designation.
