TYPES OF AWARDS

  • Need : The majority of scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, consider a student's merit and financial need in determining eligibility for award. You must be eligible for Financial Aid to be considered for these awards.
  • Merit: There are a limited number of merit scholarships for $1,000 that do not require financial need as a basis for award. International students will only be considered for merit scholarships.
  • There are a number of scholarships that take into consideration affiliation with the UW Educational Opportunity Program. If you are not affiliated, contact the Office of Minority Affairs in Schmitz Hall, Rm 394 or at 206-685-0518.

DEADLINE - WHEN TO APPLY

Students wishing to apply for scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year can submit their applications online. The deadline is April 5, 2009. Late applications will not be accepted. Please note that scholarships are awarded for the academic year. If you miss the deadline, you cannot apply again until the following academic year.

WHO CAN APPLY

  • Current undergraduate Foster School students
  • Applicants to the Foster School at the sophomore level or above

To be eligible to receive a Foster School scholarship you will need to be a full-time undergraduate student, averaging 12 credits per quarter over three quarters, for a total of 36 credits during the 2008-2009 academic year. Accommodations can be made for a one-quarter internship as long as you will be enrolled for three of the four quarters during the 2008-2009 academic year. If you plan to study abroad, you must be concurrently enrolled at the UW to be eligible for scholarships.

FINANCIAL NEED

To qualify for a scholarship with financial need as one of the criteria, you must also file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Federal Student Aid Program. We recommend mailing the FAFSA by February 15, 2009, to receive timely information for scholarship purposes. Even if you miss the February deadline, we encourage you to submit a FAFSA, as these are sometimes accepted past the deadline.

SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED YEARLY

Most scholarships are for one academic year. Students who received scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year need to re-apply for the 2009-2010 academic year.
